Deltabeam - the ultimate composite beam
When large open spaces are needed, we often face problems with increasing structural depth and heavier constructions. Yet an open space provides flexibility in layout arrangements for the entire life cycle of the building.
Flexibility of layout arrangements is becoming a more and more important factor for building owners. Estate developers value the option of easy adjustment of the spaces according to the users’ needs or even of changing the purpose of use of the building.
Today’s buildings require a large amount of installation work after the actual building frame is completed. Kilometers of wire and ventilation pipes are needed to create a sophisticated environment for users. Many hours of extra work are needed to deal with obstacles such as traditional concrete beams.
How can this hassle be avoided and at the same time flexibility and future-proofing needs met, given that traditional concrete structures offer very limited choices. A larger span increases slab depth, and higher beams are needed below the slabs. It is difficult to achieve the required building height, especially in older city centers.
With a Deltabeam slim-floor composite beam construction, the depth can be minimized. Deltabeams are integrated into the floor and are usually only as deep as the slabs are. Only the bottom flange of the Deltabeam is exposed and visible from the underside. The depth of the whole structure can be reduced, which means savings in construction time and costs as well as on heating and cooling costs. This solution allows flexibility for layout changes throughout the service life of the building and also easy piping installations.
How does the Peikko solution work?
Our lightweight Deltabeams are connected to concrete columns with PCs corbels. With steel columns, either bolt or welded connection can be applied. Precast slabs are installed, or formwork for in-situ slabs is made before casting. The Deltabeams are filled with the same concrete or grout needed for the slabs. When the grout or concrete has hardened, the concrete and Deltabeam form a composite structure that is able to carry all of the necessary loads. Thanks to their internal reinforcement, Deltabeams do not need external fire-protection.
Over the last 20 years, Deltabeams have been used in over 10,000 buildings globally, in a wide range of site conditions. They have been subjected to a rigorous testing program, and the solution is widely approved in various countries. Peikko’s technical support is always available to help with special details.
